Just having a wild thought here… we never knew who Nathaniel’s (and Delilah’s… and their other brother whose name I forgot xD) mother was. I think in one Awakening convo Nathaniel said something like his father hated his mother. What if they married by arrangement? What if Nathaniel’s mother was… *dun dun DUUUUN* Orlesian? 

That would explain much…

…or maybe not. xDDDD

Can we get Erika on this? I have a vague impression the mother was from the Free Marches, but I could be sorely mistaken about this. But I would assume that Rendon chose to marry someone to get the family back to its feet after having traitors in two generations, someone with money and influence (though it seems to have turned against him after all).

Rendon Howe’s wife has only ever been mentioned in passing. We’re never told anything about her other than:

1. Rendon hated her, and I’m assuming it was pretty open animosity between the two of them if Nathaniel recalls it with such a foul expression on his face.

and 2. her side of the family was wealthy and now that the Howes are viewed as pariahs, Nate assumes they want nothing to do with him lest he sully their reputation with his.

While I have no headcanons regarding Arlessa Howe, I do know that where she is from is never specified. But I also know that Rendon loathes anything to do with Orlais. He cites ~visits to Orlais~ specifically as one of the things he resents of Bryce and the rest of the Couslands. I bet you all the jewels in Empress Celene’s crown that after dealing with the Rebellion and watching all the men in his company be slaughtered down to just 50 troops at the Battle of White River that he’d rather starve in the gutter than kiss ass to an Orlesian family for money. And this man is the king of the slimy noxious kiss-asses.

I imagine it’s safe to headcanon that Arlessa Howe was a Marcher, but it’s probably also a good idea to assume she’s Fereldan, considering how uppity the nobles can get about their blue blood (e.g. people in the nobility talking shit about Anora because all her ancestors are freeholders and she’s only a second-generation noble). If she was a wealthy merchant’s daughter and not a noble, Rendon would probably consider that slumming. :/

Things that are true and are never addressed:

• Byron Howe, Nathaniel’s great-uncle, sent his family (a wife and children) north into the Free Marches during the Orlesian occupation before he pledged Amaranthine’s troops to Maric and the Rebellion. It’s never specified WHERE in the Free Marches they were sent, but since Kirkwall is literally right there on the coast… well. (in The Stolen Throne, there’s a whole scene dedicated to Byron swearing fealty to Maric and iirc Byron weeps with joy)
• If Byron’s wife and children survived the journey and are still alive and settled in the Free Marches and never came back to Amaranthine after the war, that means that Nathaniel has Howe relatives living in the Free Marches. If they’re alive and never came back to Ferelden, I’m betting that’s where Nate was sent for those 8 years away from home.
